Diesel Retrofits

Diesel retrofit devices reduce diesel emissions from in use vehicles and equipment. They are commonly referred to as “Diesel Particulate Filters” (DPF’s), “Verified Diesel Emission Control Strategies” (VDECS), “Retrofits”, or “Traps.” They are used as a common solution  for compliance to many air quality regulations.

Cummins West has over eight years experience working with diesel retrofit systems and has installed thousands of units in a wide variety of on-road and off-road applications [Download Repower & Retrofit PDF - 688kb].

What you should know about diesel retrofits:

  • Who you select as your installer can be as important than the device you select.
  • CARB verifies that devices do what they say they will do…not installers.
  • DPF’s require regular maintenance and support…they are not fit and forget systems.
  • Not all installers are authorized to perform warrantable repairs.
  • You can rely on Cummins West to support all the products we install.

CARB Verification

In order to receive any compliance credit for installing a retrofit device on your vehicle, the device must me “verified” for the engine in which it is being applied. CARB is the agency responsible verifying retrofit devices actually achieve emission reductions. Each device has specific parameters that must be met in order for it to be applied to an engine.

An interactive database detailing which devices are available for your engines can be found at: http://www.arb.ca.gov/diesel/verdev/vdb/vdb.php

Passive & Active Devices

Simply put, DPF’s trap soot within the filter. This soot must be cooked off to avoid increased levels of backpressure to the engine. This process is known as “Regeneration”. There are 2 types of regeneration:

  • Passive Regeneration: relies on exhaust temperatures from the engine to regenerate the filter. Best applied to equipment operated under high load and duty cycle.
  • Active Regeneration: relies on external energy such as electricity or a fuel based heater to regenerate the filter. Best applied to equipment that does not operate under full load and duty cycle.

Filter Cleaning

All DPF’s require periodic maintenance. Part of this regular maintenance is a process known as “Filter Cleaning.” This process is required to remove unburned lube oil or “ash” from the filter. The interval of required filter cleaning depends on the rate in which your engine is consuming oil. Cummins West provides DPF filter cleaning services at all branch locations.

Manufacturers

The retrofit devices in our solution portfolio are manufactured by industry leaders Cleaire Advanced Emission Controls and Cummins Emissions Solutions. We sell both passive and active systems.
